Foreword
The Good Hope School Instrumental Music Program (IMP) was firstly established when Mr. Calvin WONG founded the School Band in 1980. The Band was only an 18-piece ensemble at its origin. There were 6 flutes, 5 clarinets, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 1 baritone horn, 1 tuba and 3 percussion. Four years later, Mr. LAM Wing Cheung took the baton and the Band began to grow to the size of 38 students. Mr. John CHAN later helped the School to form a string ensemble to join the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and won the First Prize. (This marked the very first appearance of the String Orchestra). In 1989, Mr. Carl CHOI was appointed as the conductor of the School Band. The Bands and Orchestra began to increase their sizes. In 2004, Mr. Carl CHOI helped the Primary Section to found the Junior Orchestra. In 2006 and 2007, the Chinese musical instruments, GuZheng and Dizi respectively, were also included into the IMP syllabus. After 20 years under Mr. CHOI's direction, the IMP was expanded to include 3 Wind Bands, 1 String Orchestra, 2 Symphony Orchestras, 1 Marching Band and 1 Chinese Ensemble and various instrumental ensembles like String Quartet, Flute Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Quartet, Brass Quintet and Percussion Ensemble. At the end of the School Year 2007-2008, there are at present totally 250 students participating in the IMP.
Since the foundation of the IMP, members have won many prizes in the Hong Kong Schools' Music Festival, an annual event participating by Hong Kong students in tens of thousands. Each year, outstanding members were granted with scholarships to participate in the Pan Pacific Music Camp held annually in Australia.
The Band has been invited to perform in the 150th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese in 1990. In 1992, the Los Medanos College Jazz Ensemble from California, USA traveled to Hong Kong and held an Interflow Concert with the Band. In 1996, the Band was invited to give a demonstration concert in the Hong Kong Band Clinic presented by the Education Department and the Tom Lee Music Fund. In the same year, the Band received an invitation from Macau to perform in the Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macau Band Fair. In 1997, the Band was invited by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society to perform in a Young Musicians Concert. In the same year, the Band traveled to Korea to participate in the Cheju Summer Band Festival. In December 1997, the Band went to Taiwan to perform in the Chiayi International Band Festival. In July 1999, the Band was invited to perform for the Concert Band Master class given by Mr. Felix Hauswirth, President of World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in the Hong Kong Band Fair. In August the Band was invited by the Korean Band Association again to join the Cheju '99 Summer Band Festival. The Band was acclaimed "the most beloved band in the Festival". In 2001 and 2002, the Band participated in the school production of the SongBirds and the MIC Centennial Celebration Pageant respectively. In August 2002, the Band was invited to perform in the 3rd Macau International Band Festival. For the past few years since 2004, the Band has made several concert tours to Japan, Beijing, Australia and New Zealand, visiting her Sister Schools to express warmth and love through music to various places around the world.
The Good Hope School Instrumental Music Program is now under the direction of Mr. Carl CHOI, various conductors as well as numerous instrumental instructors and has the unfailing support of Sr. Pauline YUEN MIC (Good Hope School Supervisor), Ms Corina CHEN (Good Hope School Principal), Mr. Paul CHOW (Assistant Principal) and Mrs. Betty THAM, Ms Clare CHAN, Mrs. Vian TONG (Music Panel members).
