Mr. Carl CHOI

CHOI began his music studies with Mr. Bing-tong CHENG at his early ages and later studied clarinet with Messrs. Charles LEE and PAK Chit Man. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1989 majoring in Music. During his university years, CHOI studied clarinet with Maestro John Albert Koljonen; composition with Dr. Anne BOYD and Mr. Doming LAM; conducting with Messrs. Doming LAM and Jimmy CHAN; and also chamber music with Mr. Malcolm BUTLER. CHOI has performed in various orchestras and bands, including China Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Symphonic Band and Guangzhou Wind Orchestra. Presently, CHOI serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor of both the Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra and the Macau Wind Orchestra. Enthusiastic in band education, CHOI is known for his comprehensive master-classes and workshops, and as a respected adjudicator of music competitions. He is the conductor of the Hong Kong Baptist University Concert Band, Diocesan Preparatory School Orchestra & Band and the Farm Road Government Primary School Band. He also serves as the Instrumental Director of the Good Hope School (Secondary & Primary). He gave numerous performances with his groups both locally and overseas including Australia , Japan , Korea and Taiwan .

Conductors

Mr. Kelvin NGAI (Senior, Intermediate Band)

Ngai Lung Shing started learning trumpet and piano at the age of ten. In 1999 he graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he received a Bachelor of Music (Hons.) Degree in Trumpets Performance. His teachers included the Hong Kong Philharmonic Principal Trumpet Mr. Laurence Gargan and Assistant Principal Trumpet Mr. Stuart Essenhigh.

In 2000, he received the Bernard Van Zudines Music Fund from Hong Kong and the Peabody Scholarship to further his studies at the Pesbody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University in the United States . He obtained this Master if Music degree after having spent less than a year in the States under the tutelage of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Assistant Principal Trumpet, Mr. Edward Hoffman. He also studied conducting with Dr. Harland Parker. He was also invited to join the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in a performance at Lincoln Center in New York .

Ngai has performed frequently with a number of professional orchestras as well as Music Festivals, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Macau Chamber Orchestra, Asian Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Arts Festival and Macau International Music Festival. From 1997- 2000, he also joined the highly acclaimed Asian Youth Orchestra for a concert tour of Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Canada, USA, and Australia. Moreover, he has performed for the RTHK Broadcasting shows with Fresh Air Brass Quintet in studio recordings and musical productions.

Ngai is currently a member of Fresh Air and ZARX Brass Quintets. He also serves as a Committee Member and Musician in Hong Kong Wind Philharmonia. He also engages in teaching and conducting at various high schools, junior schools, international schools and also spends much of his time to serve in Christian churches.

 

Mr. Jason KONG (Symphony Orchestra)

KONG began his musical training on the trombone at the age of 9. He was the Principal trombone of the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra before he went on studied at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, KONG continued his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Yale University, where he received the Charles Diton Scholarship for outstanding performance in brass playing and graduated with a Master Degree. His major teachers included Mark LAWERENCE, the principal trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and John Swallow, former assistant principal trombonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. KONG has performed with numerous orchestras in the USA and Hong Kong, including the Marin Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Macau orchestra. He has also served as principal trombone of the Asian Youth Orchestra on two national tours. KONG is currently a member of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

Mr. Woo (String Orchestra)

Woo Zun Hin was born and raised in the U.S. He received his B.M. in Violin Performance at the University of Oklahoma studying under Michael Ma. He then furthered his studies in a M.M. program in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Missouri-Columbia with Edward Dolbashian. He is currently the conductor of the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, both Wah Yan Colleges, and King's College.
